Center for Health Care Services

Veterans

With a commitment to serve those who have served our country, The Center for Health Care Services offers three programs to assist veterans:

  • The Military Veteran Peer Network Project
  • Texas Veteran Jail Diversion and Trauma Recovery Project (TVDJTR)
  • Veterans’ Treatment Court

The Military Veteran Peer Network Project

No one understands a veteran’s needs and challenges better than another veteran. The Center works with Battle Buddies, volunteer veterans who pair with other vets to help them “quell the chaos and engage in meaningful, significant and supportive relationships.” Battle Buddies and The Center’s own veteran advisors can help you emerge and regain an independent, productive life.

Texas Veteran Jail Diversion and Trauma Recovery Project (TVDJTR)

A military veteran combating mental health issues does not need to go to jail – they need to get help. The Center has been a national leader in jail diversion programs for more than a decade. We participate in the Texas Veteran Jail Diversion and Trauma Recovery Project (TVJDTR), funded by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration). The Center participates in CIT – Crisis Intervention Training – to help law enforcement officers learn best practices for handling veterans and others who need treatment. Often, they can transport a veteran exhibiting signs of mental illness to a crisis center, or connect them with The Center’s veterans’ services counselors.

Veterans’ Treatment Court

The Veteran Jail Diversion and Trauma Recovery Project collaborates with Bexar County Court 6 to reduce judicial conflicts that might lead to incarceration. When trauma therapy and treatment can serve the veteran better than a jail sentence, a deferred sentence is often administrated.
