The Texas Veterans Legal Assistance Project (VLAP) is a Texas Legal Services Center statewide project to expand the availability of legal assistance to low-income Texas Veterans and their families, with a focus on outreach to the disabled Veterans who live in rural areas of the state. There is no charge for our service, which is provided by telephone to eligible Veterans, at 1-800-622-2520, Option 2.
VLAP welcomes most civil legal questions, including those that relate to military benefits, federal and state public benefits and disability benefits. Common legal issues we address:
- Family law
- Consumer protection
- Department of Veterans Affair benefits
- Military discharge upgrades
To receive services, you must be a Texas resident, a Veteran (or the spouse, dependent, or surviving spouse of a Texas Veteran), and have household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.
- VLAP offers referrals to private attorneys and community services where appropriate.
- VLAP supports representatives of the Texas Veterans Commission, Veterans County Service Officers and Department of Veterans Affairs counselors.
The Veterans Legal Assistance Project is made possible by the generosity of the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance and the Texas Access to Justice Foundation.
